This article will walk you through the steps to uploading a file via Talis Engage, so that students can annotate and engage with each other directly while viewing an item on their resource list.
Access to the upload functionality is controlled by a permission, so you will need to ensure that you have an appropriate role within the system. You will also need to ensure that the list you are working with is attached to a hierarchy code, as this is necessary to ensure accurate copyright checks where some materials are subject to reporting restrictions.
Making a Request

You can request an item is added to Talis Engage by clicking on the Action button next to the list item in question. You will need to select 'Upload file':
This will open a pop-up window. If the file you need is on your computer, you can either drag it into the window, or click 'Browse files' and select it from the folder where it is saved.
You also have the ability to control how students may interact with the file. You can decide whether or not they should be able to comment on the file that's been uploaded, and also whether or not they have the ability to download the original file for personal use. These settings can also be changed later if necessary once the file had been uploaded.
Once you've added the file, click on Submit:
Within seconds you should get a notification that your file is now live. Refresh the page to see the newly added Talis Engage item.
The list item will now feature a 'View Online' button, users can click on that to view the resource within the Talis Engage interface.
Items that require a copyright check
If you are using Talis Aspire Copyright Clearance, you may have set up Talis Engage so that books / journal articles that contain an ISBN or DOI are put through a copyright check to ensure compliance with local reporting requirements.
There is an additional step involved if a user uploads a file against these list items. Once you have submitted a file for upload, you will see a screen something like this:
This echoes the workflow from Talis Aspire Copyright Clearance, where an identifier from the bookmark is used to ensure copyright compliance for the item / course in question. Once the user hits 'Submit', the request is put through the same checks as if a request for a digitised scan had been made, and this generates a new request in your digitisations area.
Because we are ensuring that your materials are copyright compliant, if there is a problem with the digitisation request - eg this item is not covered by your licence - then the request will be referred, in which case the upload will not go live in Talis Engage until library staff have processed the request in Talis Aspire Copyright Clearance in the usual way.
