Talis Engage features a range of flexible settings that you can use to configure which materials your academics can upload to a list, giving you control over what is shared with students. This article explains the options available. The Talis Engage settings can be accessed by System Administrators behind the Admin menu in Talis Aspire, and once enabled can be updated at any time.
Note that the settings options will differ slightly depending on whether or not your institution also makes use of Talis Aspire Copyright Clearance. This article covers both scenarios.
Institutions that use Talis Aspire Copyright Clearance
Institutions that use DCS integration / no copyright solution
Talis Aspire with Copyright Clearance
If your institution uses Talis Aspire Copyright Clearance, the Settings area will appear as follows:
Allow Upload of Files
The first setting is fairly simple; you can choose whether or not users have the ability to upload files to Talis Engage or not. The ability to upload is further protected by a permission, so when requesting that Talis Engage is enabled, you will also need to let us know which roles within the system will need this ability.
Copyright Clearance Resources
With regards to files uploaded against journal articles and books, Talis Engage can make use of the same workflows that are present in Talis Aspire Copyright Clearance, to help you ensure copyright compliance with the reporting organisations in your territory.
- The library may decide that requests can only be made against list items where a DOI or ISBN is present in the item's metadata; this allows us to run checks to automatically identify whether or not an item is copyright-compliant, and if necessary refer the request to the library for a decision.
- The library may also allow requests to be made against journal articles / books even when no DOI or ISBN is present in the item's metadata; without this identifier we cannot run as tight a check against the item, but the library can still identify items uploaded via Engage if necessary, by using reports.
- If you are particularly concerned about copyright reporting, you may choose to prevent users from uploading files against journal articles / books altogether.
Other Resources
Talis Engage supports the upload of files against all resource types, where decisions on copyright compliance are often subject to fair dealing / fair use considerations. The library can decide whether or not you wish to allow your users to upload files against item types that are not strictly covered by copyright reporting rules.
Institutions that use DCS integration / no copyright solution
If your institution makes use of our DCS integration, or does not use any kind of integrated copyright clearance solution, the Settings area will appear as follows:

Books and Journal Articles
The usage of books and journal articles is typically subject to copyright compliance reporting, so it's essential that any usage of these resource types is recorded accurately. The library may decide whether or not they wish users to have the ability to upload files against these resource types when they appear in a list. You will still have the ability to identify these items via the reports in Talis Aspire.
