You can annotate or comment on all resource types within Talis Elevate. This is a great way for you to engage in discussion with your peers on important elements of the content on your course. You will be assigned a colour for your highlights and avatar when you first join Talis Elevate, and this colour will follow you through your use of the system.
As well as making class comments (available to everyone in your course), you're also able to make personal/private notes which are visible only to you.
- Commenting on documents
- Commenting on video
- Commenting on images and non-text elements of resources

- Agree with a comment
Commenting on documents
To create a new comment on a document, simply highlight the body of text you want to write a comment on. You will see the text highlight in 'your colour' and a comment box appear on the right of the screen.
At this point you can choose whether to:
- Post your class comment anonymously. See here for more information on anonymous commenting.
- Make the comment a Personal note instead.
Commenting on video
On media files, you will see comments appear across the timeline of the video. To write a comment, simply click the pencil icon whilst the video is playing, or select a point on the timeline, then click the pencil icon.
You will see your teacher's and fellow students' comments show on this timeline as well.
Commenting on images and non-text elements of resources
To add a comment, click on the image or non-text element - this will add a pin where you clicked, prompting you to add a comment or personal note to that specific point on the image.
Again, your teachers and other students comments will appear as pins over the resource, with each person having a different colour. This makes it easy to see if it is the same students commenting on a point, or whether there are multiple students engaging in the conversation.
To highlight the pin relating to a specific comment, click the pin. This will add a vertical coloured line to the comment.
Replying to an existing comment
As well as starting a new comment, you can also reply to an existing comment or a comment within an existing comment thread. When you click 'Reply', an @mention will automatically be added to your reply which calls out the person you are replying to. This is particularly useful if you're responding to a reply within a long thread as this helps those reading the thread to track individual conversations.
This will call them out via a @mention, and add your comment to the end of the thread so that the comments are kept in chronological order.
Agree with a comment
If you want to show agreement with a comment on your Talis Elevate resource, click "Agree". This will add to the thumbs-up count, as well as offer you an optional comment box so that you can expand on why you agreed with the comment.
When a tutor or academic clicks the 'Agree' button, this is highlighted by the addition of little academic avatars next to the Agree button. The below example shows that two academics have agreed with Jeremy's comment.
The comment owner will also receive an email notification highlighting that an academic has agreed with their comment.
