Overview
Talis Aspire integrates with the Copyright Clearance Center's Pay-Per-Use service which facilitates the purchasing of resources only when they need to be used. This support article details how to use Talis DC to make Pay-Per-Use orders directly.
In order to use the Pay-Per-Use integration, you first will need to ensure a digitization has been requested for a specific resource in Talis Aspire. To learn more about how to do so, please visit this support article.
If you need more information on how to process a digitization from the librarian perspective in Talis DC, please visit this support article.

Definitions
As you process a Pay Per Use request, you will come across the following terms. Here are their definitions:
Status: This field includes two items: 1. The course(s) a resource is attached to in Talis Aspire and 2. A checkbox allowing you to place a Pay Per Use order if available.
Right: "Right" determines the availability status of an item through the CCC. You may see "Available", "Unavailable", or "Special Request" in this field.
Price: If available, this field will show the total cost of a resource using the CCC's Pay Per Use functionality.
Student Numbers: Set in Talis Aspire, student numbers are the expected or exact number of students attached to an individual course. Student numbers affect copyright clearance in some cases.
Product: This field will show whether the item is "Print" or "Electronic".
Terms: The terms of use for a specific resource purchased using "Pay Per Use". These can vary greatly between resources. You can see some examples under the "Basics" section of this article.
Basics
The Pay-Per-Use integration is available under the "CCC ACLHE Verification" button on an individual request's page:
Upon clicking this button, you will see two tabs: "Annual License" and "Pay Per Use". You will need to click on the "Pay Per Use" tab:
There are a variety of scenarios you may be presented with at this stage.
Available
If a resource is available for Pay Per Use, you will see a checkbox show up under the "Status" column and a "Place Order" button in the bottom right hand corner of the Pay Per Use tab. In order to place your order, you will need to check the box for the relevant resource and then click the "Place Order" button.
The Status checkbox showing up is dependent on whether the resource is available in digital format, print format, or both. There are scenarios where a resource may be copyright cleared for one but not the other. If that is the case, this is an example of what you may see:
After placing your order, you will see the text "Pending" show up in place of the Status checkbox:
Unavailable
The "Unavailable" status under "Right" occurs when the CCC has identified the resource you are requesting but it is not available via Pay Per Use. In these cases, you will see the following screen under the Pay Per Use tab:
Multiple Courses
If a resource is attached to multiple courses/multiple lists, the student numbers attached to each course may affect copyright availability. Here is a view of what happens when
Likewise, both courses will appear under the "Status" column.
No Publication Found
There are some cases in which the CCC cannot find the resource you have requested as a digitization and it is not available as a Special Request. In these cases, you will see the following under the Pay Per Use tab:
Special Requests
Under CCC guidelines, a "Special Request" is a request you make when the resource is not covered by CCC licenses or is not in the CCC database. You can use Talis DC to place orders for Special Requests. Depending on the resource, different Product Types (Print or Electronic) and different Terms may be applicable. Here is an example of a Special Request resource:
The process for placing a Special Request order is exactly the same: you will need to check the checkbox under the "Status" column for the relevant items and then press the "Place order" button.
After your order is placed, the resource's Talis DC request page will replace the "CCC ACLHE Verification" button with "Manage Special Request":
Clicking the "Manage Special Request" button will take you directly to the CCC's Copyright Marketplace at this link: https://marketplace.copyright.com/rs-ui-web/mp.
Validation Issues
In some cases, key metadata like the author or publisher may be missing from a resource requested via Aspire. If this occurs, the CCC may be unable to validate your Pay Per Use request. This is an example:
