Overview
Talis Aspire and Talis Courseflow allow universities to select their choice of Clearance Solution. Both now integrate with the Copyright Clearance Center, based in the US. To read more about the Copyright Clearance Center (referred to henceforth as the "CCC"), please visit their website here. If you are not yet subscribed to Talis Aspire Copyright Clearance or Talis Courseflow, please contact your Development Manager for more information.
How it works
Instructor View
An instructor or list publisher will request a digitization in the normal way via a reading list. Once the digitization request is sent, TACC will perform a check against the CCC's requirements. If the CCC's requirements have been met, the request will either be referred to the library if there are specific restrictions on the item or will go live immediately.
If the CCC does not clear copyright for the item, the user will receive this message:
Librarian View
From the library's perspective, the requested items will show up in the "Requests" area of your digitization backend. Depending on your tenancy settings, you will see one of three messages related to a digitization fed through the CCC: Request live, Request referred, or Request rejected:
"Request live" means the CCC integration was able to automatically clear the pages requested for digitization, and no further action is necessary on the librarian's end.
"Request referred" means one of two things: 1) the CCC has specific requirements for the resource that need to be checked over or 2) Your tenancy settings automatically refer all items not cleared by the CCC to the librarian instead of rejecting immediately.
"Request rejected" means the request was not cleared by the CCC, and you have set up your tenancy so such requests are automatically rejected instead of referred.
In the latter two cases, librarians will always be able to override the CCC's checks by clicking "Copyright Clearance Obtained". You will then be prompted to choose the Source of your resource as well as add a comment.
The "CCC ACLHE Verification" button that displays underneath "Copyright Clearance Obtained" allows you to check the specific details of the item's copyright status as per the CCC:
How to set it up
To use the CCC as your primary clearance solution, please go to "Admin" => "Settings" => "Copyright clearance". From there, you will be able to choose the Copyright Clearance Center as your Primary RRO. You can also use the box labeled "Only allow clearance via the primary RRO" if you'd like requests that do not clear the CCC's requirements to be automatically Rejected instead of Referred as mentioned above.
After you choose your Primary RRO, please head to the "CCC" tab to input your CCC subscription details. You will also be able to choose your location:
