This guide is designed to introduce to the Hierarchy Snapshot report available in Talis Aspire Reading List (TARL).
Introduction
The Hierarchy Snapshot Report displays all hierarchy nodes in your tenancy. The report can be accessed from the Reports tab
Access to these reports are managed via a permission, so you can request that this permission is on any role you choose, see What is a role and what is a permission?
If you have this permission already the report tab will show on your home screen when you are logged in.
This report displays all the hierarchy nodes in your tenancy. The format of the report gives information that can be used when preparing an update through the hierarchy upload feature of Talis Aspire.
Why use this report
This report can be useful to export and compare with any new nodes you might be considering adding to your hierarchy. It can also be useful in helping you understand list coverage across your institution.
- Identify areas with weak list provision: With appropriate use of the “Linked Lists” filter and the ability to sort by list count, it is also useful to help target areas with weak list provision.
- Refine your coverage search: The “Type” filter also helps you further refine your coverage search e.g. only report on Modules with no linked lists by selecting Module from the “Type” filter and No from the “Linked Lists” filter or rank your hierarchy nodes by number of linked lists e.g. modules, by filtering by node type and then sorting the report by “List Count”
Report Filters
Code: allows a text search of the node code using the controls “Contains”, “Exact”, “Starts with”, “Ends with”, “Is empty” and “Is not empty”
Type: allows the report to be filtered by the hierarchy node type e.g. Module
Name: allows a text search of the node name using the controls “Contains”, “Exact”, “Starts with”, “Ends with”, “Is empty” and “Is not empty”
Parent Code: allows a text search of the node code using the controls “Contains”, “Exact”, “Starts with”, “Ends with”, “Is empty” and “Is not empty”
Linked lists: allows the report to be filtered by whether the hierarchy node has linked lists (Yes) or not (No)
What’s exported to CSV?
By exporting to CSV (comma separated values) the data can be read by a number of software programmes so that the data can be manipulated further, through sorting, filtering and queries. Columns contained in the CSV export are:
- Code - Hierarchy code
- Node Url - Link to the individual node on the hierarchy
- Type - Type of node (eg. Institution, Faculty, Course, etc.)
- Name - Name given to the hierarchy node
- Description - Description present on the hierarchy node
- JACS Code - JACS Code of the node (if given by the institution)
- Parent Code - Code of the hierarchy node this node sits below
- Parent Node URL - Link to the parent node on the hierarchy
- List Count - Total number of lists associated with the hierarchy node
- Published Lists - Number of published lists associated with the hierarchy node
- Draft Lists - Number of draft lists associated with the hierarchy node
How up to date are the reports?
Real-time data, as soon as you make a change the reports reflect the data.
TOP TIP
Regularly running the same report and have to set the filter each time?
Bookmark or save to favourites in your browser the report screen with the filters set, access via the bookmarked or favourite link then log in, filters are retained. If using different date ranges each time these will still have to be set manually.
