Divisibility behaviour options - (Australian Universities Only)

Introduction

To address feedback received from the Talis Aspire Digitised Content (TADC) users in Australia, we have implemented the following option in order for universities to have increased flexibility providing digitally copied content to students. The option 'Copy limit per course' sits alongside the previously available options for divisibility. If 'Copy limit per course' is selected this allows the institution to apply the copy limit to individual courses, enabling the additional use of a work in other courses within the university.

Whilst Talis has discussed this option with Universities Australia, we would remind all customers that the responsibility for ensuring compliance with copyright law remains with the customer and Talis does not provide a warranty of compliance.

How to select this option

1. If you have an Admin permission this will give access to the 'Admin' menu.
2. Select 'Settings' from the 'Admin' Menu
3. Select the 'CAL' tab.
4. To select/review the option chosen use the 'Divisibility behaviour' drop-down menu.
5. Clicking on the 'i' icon will give you information on what each option will mean for copy limits within your university.
6. Once you have made your selection click 'Save'.

Examples of how using 'Copy limit per course' will work

• Chapter 1 of Book A (pages 1-10) - to be made available to GEO123 students for Semester 1 - Accepted.
• Chapter 5 of Book A (pages 50-60) - to be made available to HIS567 students for Semester 1 - Accepted.

Both requests would be accepted as within the copy limit because the course code is different so TADC assumes the cohort of the two courses will be different.

If a second request was made for the same work for one of those courses and the same teaching period that didn't exceed 10% this would be Accepted.

• Page range 72 - 97 of Book A - to be made available to GEO123 students for Semester 1 - Accepted.
• The total requested for Book A for GEO123 at this stage would be 36 pages of 382.

If a third request was made for the same work for one of those courses and the same teaching period that exceeded 10% this would be Rejected.

• Page range 34 - 50 of Book A - to be made available to GEO123 students for Semester 1 -Rejected.
• The total requested for Book A for GEO123 at this stage would be 53 pages of 382.

Note that a Chapter for an individual course can exceed 10% of the full book if that is the only section made available for that course and is processed as a 'Full Chapter'.

In the example below Chapter 8 has been requested as a 'Full Chapter' pages 90 - 130, totaling 40 of 382, more than 10% of the full work but acceptable as 1 full chapter.

Other divisibility options available:

• Divisibility across the institution - will allow the copy limit to be shared for a work split across multiple requests in the institution at the same time.
• Divisibility within a course - will allow the copy limit to be shared for a work within one course only.
• Disabled - When divisibility is disabled only one live request (up to the copy limit 10% or one chapter/article) for a work will be allowed for the institution during the request time period.

Points to note:

• Selecting an option means it is effective for all new requests and any that are edited and resubmitted from that point onwards.
• Changing this option will not affect historical referred or rejected requests, if you wish to review these you can do so using the edit and resubmit option.
• Talis has made the new option 'Copy limit per course' available following feedback and advice from the Talis Aspire users in the Australian region and Universities Australia. The implementation of the option is at the discretion and control of each individual university and has therefore not been set as the default option.
• The University's current divisibility behaviour option will be in place until a change is made by a University-based Administrator for TADC.
