Any integration with a third party system should make you think about the privacy of your users. This article sets out details of information passed about your users when you are using the Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) integration with Talis Aspire Reading Lists.
Executive Summary
You are in control of the information you send to us and can choose the level of detail. Talis Aspire Reading Lists only requires to know the role of the user (are they a student or instructor). Any information shared with us is covered by the Master Services Agreement, End User Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy that you will find in our legal section.
What the LTI specification allows
The LTI specification allows for a number of bits of user information to be passed between the Tool Consumer (your learning management system) and any certified Tool Provider. This could include name, email address and user identifier.
Tool Consumers (Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle, etc) can choose what information is passed to any particular LTI configuration, so you have complete control over what information is shared with Talis.
What Talis Aspire Reading Lists Requires
Talis Aspire Reading Lists requires to know the role of the user in the context of the course or module being viewed. This means we are interested only in whether the user is a learner or an instructor. This information is passed as an LTI role.
Talis will never have access to student grades. The LTI integration can only access areas included in the LTI specification and even then only those that system administrators allow for that instance of the Tool in the learning system.
The configuration instructions for each learning management system are different and we have detailed these in their own separate articles.
