Product Updates - Talis Aspire

Aspire.pngNew releases and fixes for Talis Aspire

Release Update - 30th January 2024

Improvement

We made improvements to the ‘Edit Profile’ and ‘Resource View’ screens to make the reviewing process more user friendly and intuitive, with clear guidelines and required fields.

Edit Profile

This update introduced the following changes:

  • Clearly marked the required fields
  • Inclusion of remaining characters in each section
  • Additional information for each setting
  • Updated look and feel

Resource View

This update introduced the following changes:

  • Show availability of a book in your library holdings and in which format, ie ‘Available Online’
  • Alternative availability will demonstrate if an item is available through a source outside the library, (eg. ‘Amazon’, ‘Perlego’) depending on the institution’s preference
  • A list will appear at the bottom of the page linking to all lists a particular resource is on
  • Added option to ‘Edit metadata’ and ‘Export citation’
  • Updated look and feel

Release Update - 4th December 2023

New Feature

We've made a new release affecting the Reviews area. The Book Supplier information for each list item has now been broken into a separate tab; this change came about after feedback from users that there was too much scrolling involved when reviewing book items, particularly if the item in question had multiple versions available from your various suppliers. Now users can easily switch between the 'Resource info' and 'Suppliers' tabs when making a decision about an individual item.

Release Update - 12th October 2023

New Feature

Following user feedback, we've adjusted our design template so that header / footer links can now open in another tab. If you'd like to enable this on your tenancy just raise a support ticket.

Release Update - 3rd October 2023

New Feature

Users who add Paragraphs to their lists are now able to insert clickable URLs into their text. When you're writing a paragraph, simply include a URL or email address you want to link to:

Once the paragraph is saved, those URLs will automatically convert to links that a user can click:

 New Feature

For all items where no 'View Online' button is displayed, the system will now display a 'View Availability' button in that space. This release was made to address concerns that users may not realise that clicking on an item title will expand a list item, so the new 'View Availability' button will replicate that behaviour.

Release Update - 22nd September 2023

New Feature

We've just released an enhancement for our DCS integration which allows users to add notes up to 500 characters to a digitisation request to provide additional context. This information will be surfaced in the DCS along with the request that is generated.

Release Update - 24th March 2023

New Feature

Talis Aspire now has a bookmarking extension for Safari, to complement the existing ones for Chrome, Edge and Firefox. For information on why the extension should be preferred over the bookmarklet, and instructions on installing the Safari extension, do read this support article.

Release Update - 17th March 2023

New Feature

Library staff now have the ability to edit student / library notes directly in Reviews. Some institutions have workflows which entail library staff editing these notes, and had previously told us that when they see student and library notes in the reviews section they could not edit them at that point; instead users needed to go into the list edit mode in another tab to make appropriate changes. Notes may now be created, edited, or deleted from directly within the Reviews interface.

You can learn more about student / library notes in this article.

Release Update - 13th March 2023

New Feature

We have made a change to the My Bookmarks page in Talis Aspire. The 'Install Bookmark Button' has been replaced with an 'Install Bookmarking Extension' button which launches a guide instructing users on how to install the bookmarking extension. This includes a video and a link to the browser extension installation page. If the user communicates that they are unable to install the extension, they will be guided on how to install the older bookmarklet plugin.

As we have communicated in the past, Talis continues to support both the bookmarklet plugin and the bookmarking extension. However, due to the increased use of Content Security Policy (CSP) which blocks the use of Javascript-based bookmarklets, we are finding that the bookmarking extension is a more reliable bookmarking method.

Release Update - 28th February 2023

New Feature

Previously during list reviews an outcome could be set on a resource and a comment added, but when the library exported the CSV to manage their reviews the comment was not included. We've now added that field to the export so that there's no need to refer back to the Review to understand the context for the decision.

Release Update - 7th February 2023

New Feature

Previously only the staff@ attribute from an institution's IDP allowed users to be recognised as staff when implementing Automatic Profile. We have now updated Talis Aspire so that faculty@ or employee@ can also be used to implement this feature, as these values are more widely used in other territories.

Release Update - 30th January 2023

Improvement

When assigning Reviews, users who had previously had the Library Acquisitions role but have now left the institution were continuing to display in the modal menu. We have now corrected this so that only current users can be selected.

Release Update - 25th January 2023

New Feature

When viewing a reading list and starting to scroll down the list, we now have a ‘Back to top’ button that will allow users to jump to the top of the page with one click. This was released after feedback from users that it would make longer lists more easy to navigate.

Release Update - 16th November 2022

Improvement

We have introduced an improvement to the time period filter on the All Lists and All List Items reports. When you click on the time period filter to select your time periods, time periods will now display in alphabetical order. This change was made based on user feedback.

Exciting news from our partner GOBI

"GOBI print book offerings, in addition to e-book offerings, are now visible in the Reviews section of Talis Aspire, helping to further streamline acquisition for customers using both Talis Aspire and GOBI.  By providing easy visibility into both print book and e-book titles available in GOBI within their Talis Aspire workflow, the integration helps librarians easily and efficiently make the right purchase decision. Talis Aspire customers who currently use GOBI to acquire books have automatically been opted in to see GOBI print book availability.  Contact your GOBI Collection Development Manager to learn more."

Print offerings will appear once released to the live API from GOBI later today. If you have the GOBI Enhanced Supplier integration switched on within Talis Aspire - Reviews this will just appear in the Supplier Pricing section.

More details on how this integration works here: Enhanced Supplier Integrations in Reviews

Release Update - 16th September 2022

New Feature

Academic Onboarding Guides

Each year libraries have told us that they need to run refresher training for returning academics or faculty. This means that vital library resource is sometimes tied up delivering 1-2-1 support during a busy period. New academics or faculty have to get up to speed quickly as they have to use many new systems in order to deliver teaching and learning.

Objectives of the onboarding guides:

  • To help academics and faculty to self-start in Talis Aspire so they require less training, including refreshers and guidance from Library and Academic Liaison.
  • Encourage best practices to improve the structure and annotations of reading lists to support students based on student feedback on what makes a good reading list.

New Feature and Improvements

Enabling Enhanced Supplier Integrations with GOBI and Browns Books

Our goal with this addition to Talis Aspire is to enable our library acquisitions practitioners to make acquisitions decisions quickly, accurately, and efficiently by providing as much of the information necessary to make their acquisitions decisions from within Talis Aspire.

Specifically, users should be able to access the following information as part of the acquisitions decision making workflows in Talis Aspire:

  1. Determine availability of an item at one or more suppliers
  2. Determine availability of other formats at one or more suppliers
  3. Determine e-availability at one or more suppliers
  4. Determine Customer specific pricing for items at one or more suppliers
  5. See detail on currently held subscriptions or holdings

GOBI is the first of our integrations to offer the information as an aggregated service, meaning they can also show licence from a wider range of collections and ebooks direct from the publisher.

Browns Books is a UK Supplier who have recently taken over from Askews & Holts for Higher Education provision.

In addition we improved the interface and usability

An improved EBook Central's integration by enabling a search function for when the ISBN doesn't return a match for the chosen supplier

[This is currently available to UK customers only] Again, based on your feedback we have added into Talis Aspire a new List Integration Report which offers the flexibility to apply either Perlego integration version on a department or list-by-list basis. This is a bulk action so only accessible to those who have ‘view reports’ and ‘bulk actions’ permissions (unless you have made this more widely available applicable to System Administrators by default).

Release Update - 11th September 2020

Improvement
Talis Aspire Copyright Clearance can now fully support the workflows of the CLA and ICLA COVID-19 Relaxations. Talis has prioritised this development to support this change in the ruleset. Following an evaluation of the value to our users in these unprecedented times, we felt that this is a valuable temporary addition to the service.

Full details can be found in the updated supported article:
COVID-19 Relaxation to the CLA HE Licence - Talis Aspire

The change consists of the extent override option in addition to the normal workflow:

  • Override extent up to 20% or 2 Chapters (whichever is the greater)
  • NOTE: To apply the 20% or 2 Chapters, the publisher must be on the participating list.
  • Please do take time to remind yourself of the conditions - https://cla.co.uk/HE-licence-terms-amended-covid19 or https://www.icla.ie/he/ as you are manually overriding with your own judgement in light of the relaxations.

If you have had the need to use the relaxation prior to the full workflow being in place please do use Replace Request, so that we can now track and send the data monthly to the CLA on your behalf.

If you have any issues using the new functionality, please do raise a support ticket.
