Set up a CNAME for Talis Aspire Digitised Content

Find out how to view digitised content articles inline in your Talis Aspire Reading Lists (TARL) tenancy.

Why a CNAME is required (non-technical explanation)

If a CNAME is not used, your students will still be able to access digitisations by clicking on the proffered button or link.

Technical Explanation

Digitised content bundles can be embedded in an <iframe> within the reading lists application.

If your TARL tenancy has a customised domain name that is something like, then you will need a CNAME.

The CNAME will be (where ‘something’ is decided by the university): CNAME

To test that your CNAME is propagating to the internet, we will use the unix dig command. An example of output is show below for one of our customers. In your case pretty much the only thing that will be different if you run this command for your CNAME is the name of the CNAME.

unix-prompt> dig

Q - Why doesn’t the digitisation appear in Internet Explorer (IE), instead I still see the View Digitisation in a new window button?

A - The Digitised Content Player does not embed in the page in IE - instead a button appears to load the player in a new window. This is not a bug and is intentional design as it is technically not possible to embed the player in IE due to Cross Domain restrictions.
